“Our need will be the real creator” wrote Plato in the Socratic dialogue Republic. That phrase eventually morphed into the well-known proverb “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”.
Fast forward to 2020 and the world found itself in the midst of a pandemic. New ways of doing everyday things exploded onto the scene. Out of necessity indeed.
For mom and hairstylist Kristy Bennett Covid-19 meant her robust business came to a grinding halt.
Kristy’s fondness for styling hair had started early. She was actually cutting hair for folks in 1998 at the age of 14 years.
In 2005 Kristy graduated from Marvel Beauty School, receiving her license in 2006. After years of styling she opened Kristy’s Kreations in 2018, as a studio business in her home which was in Orillia at the time.
Now a Stayner resident, and with a more normal way of life returning, Kristy found that a willingness to go out for appointments was still an issue for many folks. That realization became inspiration for her to “take the show on the road.”
As a mobile hairstylist and barber Kristy will come to you. “When I arrive at a clients house, I sanitize my hands before I leave my car, put on my mask, grab my purse, work bag, and give my distinct knock at the door” says the talented entrepreneur. “My bag has everything we could possibly need for any haircut, including a 15ft extension cord as I never know where I’m cutting until I arrive at a client’s home. I even keep an extra 30ft in the car.”
Clients need only provide a chair or stool to sit on – one that does not have a high back – and a space that has decent lighting. Kristy brings her own adjustable stool for herself. If she is doing a hair colour she even brings a portable sink.
“I mostly service the areas of Stayner, Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, New Lowell and Creemore, but I will travel anywhere within 45 minutes of Stayner” Kristy says. “For weekday appointments usually 48 hours’ notice is sufficient. For weekend appointments it’s good to book at least 2 weeks ahead.”
Want references? “If people would like references please feel free to contact the Collingwood Barber Shop, City Cutz in Orillia or Smart Style in Orillia” she adds.
