Enlightened by First Light: Sainte Marie Among the Hurons

Lit path and buildingLast Friday we were thrilled to be able to attend First Light at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons. As like so many things our 2020 booking had been cancelled due to Covid.

While I understand that the remaining spots for 2021 are fully booked I do want to share here, and over the rest of the week, a few pictures from our visit. I thoroughly recommend taking the time to go in 2022.

At Sainte-Marie’s “First Light” you can discover, or rediscover, the historic site which is set aglow from candlelight for the occasion. We were told that this year’s 1000 candles are usually much more plentiful, with up to 4000 in typical year.

Christmas settingNonetheless the warm amber glow illuminated this famous 17th-century mission. The candlelit pathways guided you through the site and the historic buildings, which were decorated for the holiday season. Open fires were crackling here and there so you could stop to warm up before carrying on your tour.

We loved seeing the Horned Owl that was somewhat of a celebrity for the night and learning more about these awesome creatures.

More Christmas decorThere were treats in the cookhouse and a selection of local vendors set up in the Brebéuf Event Centre and museum, featuring a variety of items for sale.

Proper protocols were in place and masks were required even while outside on the grounds.

Our thanks to staff, vendors and organizers for a very safe and pleasant night out and learning experience! We will see you all again!
